Real Green
ON HOW YOU CAN GET REAL GREEN IN YOUR HOME
- Change to fluorescent bulbs – If every house in Australia switched to flourescent bulbs it could reduce our greenhouse gas emissions by four million tons
- Don't rinse dishes – Skip rinsing before putting plates into the dishwasher, on average you will save 50 litres of water per load
- Hang clothes outside to dry – using a clothes line or rack to dry clothes means they will last longer and you will save money
- Turn off computers at night – don't just put them to sleep
- Have showers instead of baths – Showers use half the water, especially if you install water saving shower heads and are quick! Every minute you cut from your shower is roughly 19 litres of water
- Stop buying bottled water – Instead try a reusable container to carry water. If you really enjoy the taste of bottled water you could install a filter in your home
- Turn the water off when you brush your teeth – This will save 7-10 litres of water
- Recycle glass – If you do not recycle this, it will take a million years to decompose
- Instead of hot water, use the warm or cold water setting on your washing machine
- Adjust the thermostat on your heater and air conditioner – Every degree lower during winter or higher during summer equals a 10% decrease on your energy bill
- Turn off lights when you are not using them
- Instead of having a paper phone book delivered opt to use an online directory instead
- Take your car through a car wash, it is a lot more water efficient then washing at home
- Pay your bills online – If every house did this we would save millions of trees every year
- Go green when shopping – replace plastic bags with reusable ones
- Inflate the tyres on your car – If your tyres are inflated at all times your car will run further on less petrol
- Plant a tree - It's good for the environment, provides shade during summer and can add value to your property
